"What does Tijuana Panthers mean? A band I started with my good friends."

Great friends and honest music – these are two of the defining elements of the surf rock trio Tijuana Panthers. The Long Beach-based band joined us at the REVOLVE studios to shoot a lookbook based on their personal style on and off the stage, and had a sit-down with drummer Phil Shaheen to discuss their music, their style and their friendship.

How did you meet? We met in high school, but didn't start playing music together ‘til we graduated. We’ve been playing music together in one form or another for 15 years.

How did you find TJP's image? We grew up in Long Beach and our style and image for the band I guess reflects that. I found a photo in 9th grade of a dad working in the yard with his kids from a 1954 National Geographic magazine. He was wearing an old plain t-shirt and had his jeans cuffed.

Who are your musical influences? Dead Milkmen, Suburban Lawns, Orange Juice, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, Buzzcocks, TSOL, X, Ian Dury, and Gang of Four.

Favorite song from the new album? Cherry St.
