"When I first saw Takashi Murakami's artwork, I smiled and wondered,
'Where did this explosion come from?
Who was responsible for this collision of what seems part psychedelia, part manga, and well--ART!'"
-- Marc Jacobs
The anxiously-awaited
Murakami exhibition at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art opens this weekend. Tracing Takashi Murakami's artistic development from his creature-like sculptures of the 1990s to his cartoonish "superflat" painting style to his high-end handbag collaboration with Louis Vuitton, the exhibition is a J-pop dream for art, fashion, and film enthusiasts alike.
Murakami for Louis Vuitton
Blurring the line between art and commerce, the MOCA will also unveil a fully-operational Louis Vuitton boutique, showcasing the artist's collaboration with LV designer Marc Jacobs on their iconically whimsical line of luxe leather goods. Shopping as art form? We like the sound of that!

A red version of the Time Bokan-pink painting (center) hangs in Kanye West's home.
And in other Murakami news, the artist is collaborating with BFF Kanye West on a new line of
jewelry. Earlier this month, Kanye attended Paris Fashion Week wearing "a huge gold Manga-style diamond-studded pendant" as he sat front row. No conflict diamonds, we hope!
