Although we are in the thick of the winter holidays, it's difficult not to get ahead of ourselves after flipping through the Ella Moss Spring 2013 look book! Airy dresses and blouses and printastic tops and bottoms are covered in spring's signature pop colors that scream for a beachside vacation. Founder and designer Pamella Protzel (can you guess where Ella came from?) gives us some scoop on the inspiration behind the Spring collection, some very helpful styling tips, and talks about her love for sunny LA.
1.Describe your Spring collection in three words:
Whimsical, graphic, and feminine
2. What was the inspiration behind this collection?
The collection is called "Western Wild and the Sunshine State" The inspiration is bold prints, lots of color and a western flare
3.One cant-live-without piece of the collection and why:
The Salinas boucle moto jacket. It's perfect to throw on over a dress or wear it with a tee and a pair of skinnies. It's so versatile and works easily as the seasons are changing.
4.Who is the Ella Moss girl?
The Ella girl is feminine, modern and sophisticatedly playful.
5.Baseball-inspired attire is so major right now and for Spring. What was your inspiration behind making that trend your own?
I designed the baseball tee shape in soft crepe color blocking and also did it in mixed silk prints to make it feel very Ella. I love pairing these tops back to a short flirty skirt to get the perfect balance of sporty and feminine.
6.Baseball Tee + a baseball cap = home run outfit or a strike-out?
Strike-Out!
7.Styling tips on layering prints:
Play with scale. Pair a smaller print back to a bigger one. Don't overdo it with prints of the same size. Also keep a color story consistent in your look. It'll help to complement the patterns.
8.How does being from LA resonate in your collections?
I get so much inspiration from the west coast. I love the '70s vibe of Topanga Canyon, the 60s retro feel of Palm Springs, the Rock n' Roll mood of Sunset and the modernist design found in all the mid century architecture. I constantly use all of these influences as inspiration within the collections.
