This dress is traditional Tapa design from the Pacific. While art and craft from many cultures has been the inspiration for fashion over the centuries it would be respectful to correctly attribute the inspiration. Especially when it has been so literally interpreted. Show respect for living Pacific Culture please. Would not buy this dress.
This dress is Fijian Masi not Aztec!!! please remove or rename! Do not spend $500 NZD on a dress that does not acknolwedge where the pattern came from orginally! A quick google search will show anybody that this is Fijian Masi. the reason we are upset about this is Masi is used in cultural ceremonies in Fiji and given at important events such as 21sts, weddings etc.
These designs are clearly from Fiji; specifically, they are designs from Fijian masi (tapa/ paperbark cloth). How many of your other 'original' designs did you find through google images? I wonder: is the greatest injustice here to the Fijian or Aztec communities? I do have a practical suggestion for your designer - perhaps you would consider pairing up with Nike who have recently released a line of exercise clothing which is apparently 'inspired' by Fijian, Samoan and Maori tattoos? I'm sure you could find a lot of common ground and come up with a real cutting edge collection - after all, they claim to be using Pacific design, and you claim to be using another kind of design, and in both cases you have appropriated the intellectual property of specific Pacific Indigenous communities in order to make money. Perhaps you didn't realise that we in the Pacific are not only alive and real, but we are online and savvy and more than capable of recognising theft when we see it.
